The existing Morse Park Swimming Pool Complex was originally opened to the public on 3 December 1970 and it has served the nearby community for nearly 50 years. The original swimming pool complex consist of two 50m long, 8 lanes swimming pools, 3 training pools, a children’s pool as well as a diving pool, all of which are outdoor pools. This project comprises of construction of a new indoor heated pool and provision of a new outdoor children’s pool in place of the existing secondary pool and children’s pool.
Project challenges
The existing portion of Morse Park Swimming Pool Complex consisting of the Main Pool and the 3 Training Pools would be in operation throughout the construction of the new Indoor Heated Pool and the new Children’s Pool.
Interfacing between new and existing structure was problematic especially from concrete spalling as well as seepage following heavy rain.
How to keep the design of the new potion to be coherent with the overall Swimming Pool Complex as well as the site surrounding.
Project solutions
Early and careful planning in the works sequence and phasing of works. Many of the noisy or more complication works were arranged so that it was to be carried out upon pool closure period to minimise compliant from the public as well as keeping disturbance during pool opening period to a minimum.
Upon finding out the condition of the existing structure was much worse than we envisioned upon early demolition stage, we adopted an alternative approach in minimising the extent of interfacing between the new and the existing structure. In area where it is inevitable, comprehensive details were adopted to ensure the most suitable method were selected to handle to interfacing area.
One of the most unique characteristic of the site is its close proximity to the adjacent No. 3 Morse Park consisting of vast amount of vegetation and is renowned for being home to a wide collection of tree species. The large windows and the raised pool deck from the Indoor Pool Hall facing No. 3 Morse Park allow swimmers and visitors to enjoy the view of the trees and green vista from an elevated level while also effortlessly blending the outdoor environment with the indoor pool hall.
